I barely made it through the first 80 pages of the book, for the start was tough to get through. (my 100 page rule worked - give a book 100 pages; if you are not hooked by then, toss it). But once the family moved to Newfoundland, the story of life in that area became interesting, and the dynamics of the family, the people and the land kept me wrap up in the story.

Started off not as interesting as I'd hoped, but picked up pace and the writing got better and easier to read. Started off sounding like the author was trying to hard to impress readers with how the book was written.

One of the most moving books I have read .. on human struggles and recovery

What can I say? I struggled. The lack of verbs, perhaps supposed to represent the sparseness of Newfoundland, just irritated me!!

Loved this book! The way the characters were drawn it just gave such an honest and yet some how beautiful depiction of the human character. I wanted to both slap and hug some of them at times. Such a worthwhile read.

When I started I wasn't sure, but it didn't take long to win me over. Amazing writer, I was right there in Newfoundland.
