"A funny tragic Gothic tale, with a speed boat of a plot, overflowing with black-comic characters. ...it is also that contemporary rarity, a tale of redemption and healing, a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit, and most rare of all perhaps, a sweet and tender romance." (Toronto Star) I have a friend, a professional knot tier who is always using "Ashley's Book of Knots." Several lines from this manual begin each chapter of "The Shipping News" Excellent character descriptions and also "A funny tragic Gothic tale, with a speed boat of a plot, overflowing with black-comic characters. ...it is also that contemporary rarity, a tale of redemption and healing, a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit, and most rare of all perhaps, a sweet and tender romance." I did not enjoy this book. I kept reading in hopes of it getting better and it never did. It was well written, but the story line was severely lacking drama, heart ache or anything to draw you in and make you sympathize with the main character.

Very enjoyable - more so than the novel it's based on. Now if only they'd filmed all the Agnis scenes written in this screenplay... especially her moments with Mavis.
