Someone else had to point it out to me. The urge to skim bit me in the butt this time. Nooooooo!!! It pains me to have to write another low-rated review this week, but no matter how much I tried to justify the good parts of Dark Light outweighing the bad, I just couldn't seem to get my mental scales to balance. Between the cringe-worthy terms, the excessive amount of character description, the ditzy lead character who used her vag for a brain, and the random placement of all things pop music - this book read as extremely shallow and immature for the amount of sexual content present. Is Dark Light adult or NA? Who the hell knows. The second half of the book had enough sex scenes to qualify as mild erotica, but the main character is age 20. I'm going to hesitantly shelve this as NA, mainly because I like to be able to quick reference character ages by shelf. The bones of the story reminded me of the Caster Chronicles (Beautiful Creatures) concept. One young woman has to choose whether to be claimed by the light or the dark. However, it was hard to find much of a story around Gaby's hormonal urges. What I liked (the short list) : A couple of the sex scenes. The possibility of real conflict in book 2, given what we know now. What I didn't like (the not-so-short-list) : I don't care about every single clothing, hair, makeup, and lingerie detail being explained for multiple scenes. So much emphasis was put on looks. More than one of us in our buddy read noticed that Dorian's blue eyes were constantly mentioned. There was a lot of repetitiveness going on. At first, I thought it would be a treat to read a book set in my city...until I started to feel like I was reading a very bizarre travel brochure. The city name was mentioned several times, as well as many areas of town, all by name - everything from the Broadmoor, Cheyenne Mountain, Chapel Hills Mall, Briargate, All 4 military bases, the AF Academy, Garden of the Gods, Palmer Park, Memorial Park, UCCS, downtown, etc. etc. Woodmen Road was mentioned twice when describing the location of the Jamba Juice, then in case we needed to know where on Woodmen the JJ was, we were informed that it was in Woodmen Commons (I used to live 6 blocks from that JJ and never knew the name of that shopping center). Instead of being driven back to her car, she was driven back to her car on Woodmen Road...an unnecessary detail, especially for people who don't live here. I didn't fully understand the point of all the site name dropping, especially when the characters were jumping around from point to point, even when locations weren't close together at all. Gaby was not the sharpest tool in the shed. I don't care how much Dorian's (view spoiler)[magical (hide spoiler)] influence came into play, this chick came across as flighty, horny and shallow at all times. I don't want to read about how someone is constantly horny, regardless of the reason or influence. Give me hot sex when the time comes for a sex scene. The rest of the time, I need some substance. Physical attraction is supposed to be used to build sexual tension, not as a means for a character to forget how to function when not with another person. I didn't care how or why this chick had to stop herself from putting her hands between her legs in public. Karen Marie Moning can get away with this type of writing...the rest of us - not so much. Dorian came across as a creeper a good portion of the time and this chick was swooning like nobody's business. Some of her comments were downright disturbing as she acknowledged his tendency to violence. But hey...he could slit her neck right now and she would die in sweet ecstacy. He's even hot enough to not have to worry about those pesky condoms right away. Because hotness = safeness. Whatever weird voodoo magic Dorian has, keep me the hell away from it. I could never be that blind, that stupid. Right? Unless a story is about music or music related, I'm never a fan of lots of random song titles or musician references thrown about randomly in a story. It dates a book and often comes across as trying too hard to be relevant. Not everyone has the same taste in music, so let's leave "today's current hits" for the radio. There was lots and lots of smirking. Dorian also licked his lips and smacked his lips. OH AND HE EVEN COOED ONCE. The sexual terminology was cringe-worthy. Waterfall of her release? Our rivers unite into a deep, endless ocean? It must be some awesome river mingling though, if it's inspiring the need to lie down and be bludgeoned to death with a large, blunt object. Even if his only purpose in my life is to provide me with mind-numbing passion, I'd happily accept it with open arms. And open legs.

Another thing that sort of ruined it for me was how each problem that arose had an immediate solution. While these obstacles could have added some mystery and suspense to the plot, there were many available "talking heads" available to provide immediate relief. The literal book with all of the answers to her past, the solution to how she has been hidden for all of these twenty years (view spoiler)[(a smoothie, really?) (hide spoiler)] . And I hate to say it, but the final nail on the coffin of this book was that I felt no connection to Dorian. He was flat, one dimensional, kind of a creeper guy. I rarely don't find male leads sexy...I'm a hooch like that...I love them all. But Dorian just didn't do anything for me. As for being compared to Barrons? Puhlease... A final disclaimer: I only made it through about half of this book. I think this obviously could work for a lot of people, but not me. I feel like the author relied too heavily on the paranormal fallback, and her characterization and plot suffered for it. First make me like the characters, then make me believe your story.

Well, mundane that is until she finds out exactly whom she is…because who she is will lead her in to a destiny she herself could have never imagined. ‘Mmmm, Dorian. Even his name melts on the tongue like butter.’ Gabi is out celebrating her 20th birthday with friends when she spots the gorgeously handsome man across the room staring at her like there in no one else in the room but she and he. The man of course approaches and immediately makes a lasting impression with his raw energy, but shortly after introductions are made the man who introduced himself as Dorian departs. Leaving Gabi a bit…moist…if you know what I mean. The truth Growing up in a loving home with a caring mother and father Gabriella always knew she was different; her identity is pretty much a mystery. Her mom and dad being her adoptive parents she only knew that to be true. Nonetheless, with her twentieth birthday comes truth. Gabriella’s mother relays some very significant information about her real identity, about her birth mother. Finding it a little hard to process Gabriella gets sick to her stomach. Literally. Yet once she pulls her emotions together she thrusts herself in to the info provided. And oh boy is it A LOT of info. Slowly Gabi starts to see things she has never seen before, her senses become a little more acute then before. You see Gabi’s uniqueness puts her in great danger. A danger that has been looking for her since her birth however danger could not find her due to protection spells. ‘You were born into an ancient lineage of Light Enchanters… We are Sorcerers… Our magic is one of the oldest and purest forms ever known and one of the most secretive… Do not be confused with modern society’s perception of magic...’ Too close for comfort When a woman in the area is murdered it links back to Gabi. While no one else is able to connect the dots it takes Gabi no time at all to know that this murder hits way too close to home. In the mean time, Dorian(PAUSE) Yeah, let’s not forget about the alluring Dorian with his amazing good looks and confidence that seems to emanate from his pores. The fine man that is Dorian has smoothly insinuated himself into Gabi’s life. And then…he flips it upside down. My Thoughts I really enjoyed the story I was swept up in to Gabi’s world. Jennings was super descriptive a ton of info is given sometimes it was a lot to process for both me and the character. It was coming non-stop poor girl could not catch a break. Wait. I’m lying she had a few breaks that involved some great naughty moments with Dorian *wiggles eyebrows suggestively* One thing I did notice in the writing was a good deal of over thinking and inner monologue with the heroine. I easily overlooked this minor issue whenever Dorian came on the scene HA! My Ratings Characters- Sexy & Daring Writing Style- Fun and fast paced. Plot/Storyline- A young girl finds out she comes from a long line Light Enchanters. She is told that her birth is very significant in many ways. She is told that her people and their future is in her hands. But first she has a choice to make. Steam Factor- High/Steamy on a scale of 1-10 I say 8 Entertainment Level- Med-Lo-Hi I say Medium, the story held my attention and the world building was done well Overall- I loved it!!! I recommend PNR lovers to give it a read! Now go forth and read. Then come tell us about it on Goodreads! For more reviews got to: www.realitybites-letsgetlost.blogspot... Gabriella (the MC) is a cool chick, I can see myself hanging out with her. She didn't annoy me, though I did spend 60% of the book wanting to shake her and tell her what I knew that she didn't. I fully expected this to be a typical "insta-love romance". I appreciated the fact that Gabriella took it as "insta-lust" . I really really appreciated that. "Why would any somewhat sane, shrewd young woman deem it necessary to completely throw herself at a man she's only known for a week? "Between the champagne and tequila shots, my head is swimming and my inhibitions have taken a dive along with my already questionable morals." Tell me you haven't been there. Or don't bc if you haven't been there...I'll corrupt you. She's trying to find herself throughout the book. Trying to figure out who/what she is and who/what she should become. I appreciated the lost journey she went through because we all go through that. Hell, some of us are still going through that. I loved that she wasn't weak and didn't take crap from anybody. Dorian, Dorian, Dorian. This guy made me swoon. Like, all out, butterflies in my stomach, swoon . This doesn't happen often (really, it doesn't). He's such an enigma that it should be difficult for you to connect with him, but the way he is written, he just draws you in and makes you sit on edge waiting for the next time he comes out. "No one has ever moved me like you. Ever. The feeling you give me is insane. It's unnatural. You intoxicate me." "Cut the shit. I'm not some giggling schoolgirl and I don't take kindly to games. So save the googly eyes and phone sex voice." BAM! So Dorian has his secrets, Gabriella seems to think she has her secrets. "You see Gabriella. Darkness is not always what it seems. It can appear frightening at first but there is truly nothing to fear. Sometimes the light can blind us from the truth." So many times I wanted to hit Gabriella upside the head and say "PAY ATTENTION!" Anyhow, I kind of need you all to read this story so we can discuss. Please and thank you. I will leave you with another quote (seriously, ever since I discovered how to highlight I am on a total quoting frenzy). "I am not light. I am not Dark. I'm his." <3 So am I, Gabi, so am I. Also, it's not that this book leaves you with a cliffhanger, I don't think I would classify this as one, but O.M.G. I need to know what is going to happen!

I should have known better. Whenever independent books have ratings this high I’m the one person that HATES them. This one proved no different. On round two I made it to page twelve before I had to stop. If I could sum (the beginning of) this book up with one word it would be Awkward. Awkward phrases: “…all-around erotic.” Awkward interactions: -Gabi and Jared. *cringe* -Gabi and her parents. (Calls them Mom/Dad/Donna/Chris. Pick one! Are they Mom and Dad or do you use their first names?) Awkward sentence construction: “Classes are the same tedious, humdrum ramblings of useless information.” “The static in the air from the tender moment swirls and sticks to us like humidity and I’m thankful for the changed subject.” F.M.L. Seriously!? Awkward internal monologue: “He really is one of my oldest, dearest friends. And while I may have admired his good looks in secret, our friendship is exceedingly more important than any romantic possibilities. I quell the foreign thought and clear my throat in an over-exaggerated manner.” Okay, wtf? If you're constantly thinking about how hot your best friend is, how can those thoughts be foreign? Also, the over-exaggerated throat clearing? Why? Not only was this book Awkward but it was gearing up to be Annoying. It seemed to have all the stereotypical drama one finds in YA-PR books • Doesn’t know her real parents - check • Unrequited love between male/female friends – check • Doesn’t know she’s attractive – check • People mysteriously dying – check And these I gathered from reading other reviews • Clueless heroine – check • Love triangle – check • Incessant whining – check • Obvious plot “twist” – check So I guess if you are a fan of drama, haven’t had your fill of stereotypical YA-PR plots or are looking for an easy read that promises kinky sex and an annoying heroine, read this book.

And her scorching hot, lip-biting addiction for the man she can’t deny, no matter the cost. Page Count: 313 Pages My Thoughts: Dark Light was an amazing story that was full of unexpected twists and exciting turns. The average in this story? Not so average. The mediocre? Extraordinary. The dark? Not dark at all. These elements and more kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end of the story. Gabriella's feelings (angst, confusion, love, and lust) were effusive and the reader was able to feel what she felt. The first person slant on the story (which I typically do not enjoy but did in this story) allowed the reader to fully engage in Gabriella's world. Dark Light was intense journey of an average woman finding out about her heritage and coming to terms with it before fully ascending into her powers on her 21st birthday. Once she ascended Gabriella would have to choose her side -- dark or light. But dark and light aren't exactly representative of good and evil in this story. Dark has shades of gray as does the light...and those shades are where Gabriella lies. She is caught between both worlds but both of them equally call to her. Trying to find a balance between who she was and who she is becoming, Gabriella hides her true self (or rather, new self) from her friends and family immersing herself in a world of secrets, half truths, and lies. The addition of Dorian to the story definitely hitches it up a notch for me. He was mysterious and dark but Gabriella was drawn to him as a bee is drawn to honey. But Dorian isn't all he appears either. He too has his secrets. As Gabriella and Dorian begin the intricate dance of seduction, their worlds are thrown into a tailspin as their unbidden feelings join the dance. Their passion is tangible, their couplings are intense, and their feelings are real. This truly was an amazing story that was unlike any that I have read before. It's not your average PNR story of vampires or werelwolves or even witches and warlocks. The story is interwoven with the hint of intrigue so it definitely punctuates the paranormal aspect in an interesting manner. If you're looking for something a little different but still interesting and smoking hot in your PNR then Dark Light by S.L. Jennings is the book for you. The sequel, Dark Prince, comes out in March and I cannot wait. Reading Time: 5 Hours Visit The BookChick Blog

It is supposed to be a PNR, but the PN is nowhere in sight. It is so very subdued and inconsequential I had to remind myself of the genre every so often. And why is it that the author chose the biggest possible cliches to hang on to, like the age of her MC. So Gabriella finds out her otherworldly heritage and she will forever be 21? Seriously? Either 21 or 18 every time in these types of novels, no fail. Never mind that we are supposed to deal with ancient magic and that being 21 a few hundred years ago would make you a grandmother. There simply wasn't medicine or the security needed for a long lifespan as we enjoy today. Plus I don't get this 21 bullshit anyway. You are an adult and could get life should you commit a crime, but hey! No beer! Cuz that makes sense... The romance is weirdly intense to that point that it gives you the heebie jeebies. She meets this guy named Dorian (original name BTW) in a nightclub (original setting BTW), and he is instantly captivated by her (original scene BTW). There is this insta-lust brewing between them as they are pulled together not by common sense and attraction, rather supernatural vibes (original plot twist BTW). Long story short, he makes her very horny, and wet...all the time. What takes the cake however, is the writing style. I wouldn't call it waxing poetic. I wouldn't call it OTT either, just simply of the mark. I am not saying that I don't appreciate eloquence, or that by being twenty years old a person is unable of speaking correctly, but this.... godamn... When she's talking about Dorian, “..he coos”, or every time he wants to say something, “ ..he breathes”. Once or twice I can stand, but if you use it constantly I keep imagining him panting like a dog, or talking like that kid in a wheelchair from Malcolm in the Middle. Then you have this... “I pull out my curling iron and commence to fashioning dangling ringlets...I pull my tresses up with a silver clip” Cuz that's just how college kids talk these days. Honestly, I got a feeling I needed to ring for the butler every time I wanted to turn my pages. It simply taken away from the entire experience so drastically, it made it unreadable. Maybe there is an ending buried in there. Maybe something finally happens. Maybe he breathes her panties off....I simply couldn't care less.

That is so hard for me. I rarely feel that negatively towards a heroine but she cannot be that absolutely, bloody idiotic. How in the hell did she NOT know Dorian is Dark? Crap, I knew that from the second we were introduced to him in the club. Aside from that, the fact that she took pleasure from Dorian intentionally hurting her during sex (although tame compared to some scenes I've read), her missing ALL of the clues he gave her including his constantly going hot to cold (glaring to sultry looks), the fact he looks like all of the Dark people she dreamed of, her reactions to Jared with Aurora (like hello? The crap she did with Dorian, the fact she hid her relationship with him, and the BS about loving Jared, but blah, blah, blah...yet she cannot stomach him with Aurora or anyone...selfish much?), and her constant complaints about well everything (feeling mediocre, her adopted parents trying to protect her, her real parents expecting her to be light, the Light not helping her, etc.). So yes, I don't like the girl...I had a hard time reading in some cases because she just irritated the hell out of me... I thought the book was pretty well written, and the sex scenes were a bit 50 shades of grey (can do with some but sometimes enough is enough), and the twist at the end...which I started to guess about 60% of the way made it interesting enough to continue reading...and that is because I was WAITING for the damned girl to get slapped upside the head with the truth about Dorian. Don't get me wrong...there is a part of me that likes him (don't fully trust him)...and wants him to truly feel what his best friend felt, but...um, I'm bothered by them as a whole...heck, for that matter, I stopped rooting for her to be with Jared because him I LIKE. I'd prefer he was with a girl who deserved him and I just don't think it is her. So, I am uncertain on book 2...I just don't know if I am ready for more Gabriella...until I can decide that, I think I am taking a break and reading a different series/book. I do hope she grows up and at the end, the end of the story is truly awesome, but for now good luck to others who read this. The last time I gave a truly honest review, other readers were pretty offended. However, keep in mind, this is just my opinion...for all I know you will love her and that is your prerogative.

I never intended on reading this book but when it went on sale I said why not! I was not disappointed! This book is full of suspense that had me wanting more. And then there is dreamy mysterious Dorian. It makes for a perfect combination for a great story. Can't wait to see what's in store! Highly recommend!!!

In the spirit of being an unselfish book blogger though I kind of have the Girl Scouts honor obligation duty to tell you about this book. AND I want to spread the word about this amazing series as much as possible so you guys not only jump on the paranormal band wagon but introduce you to new upcoming, kick ass Author S.L. Jennings or Syreeta as Akilah likes to call her by her first name since we practically stalk her 2-3 times a week via twitter. Ok so I got a ARC copy of this book from my girls at THESUBCLUBbooks who at the time were organizing their first blog tour. I wanted to support them in their new venture because I love them so much! Ever since Twilight I haven’t really found that good paranormal that has stuck with me and been in it’s OWN unique story. Well that was all said and DONE when Dark Light made its way on my kindle! OMG!! The synopsis to this books starts off by saying Love. Sex. Magic and yall know I love outlines. So that is exactly how I will organize my review. Love… So the book is about a sophmore community college student Gabriella AKA Gabi. She is a sweet/sassy girl, independent, has a group of close knit friends and a good relationship with her “parents.” Not really sure what her passion is in life but she is otherwise content with her “medicore” life. Like most girls her first love is her male BFF Jarred that she has liked for years but for whatever reason (read the book damnit) things don’t go in their favor to move from the friend zone. Which in the end is ok because the Greek God himself with all his Sexyness walks into her life Dorian Skotos. ” Oh my God, do you know that guy?” Morgan asks me, following my gawking hazel eyes. “Um, no,” I reply, trying to sound impassive.” “Are you sure? Becuause you two have been eye fucking for the past 10 minutes,”- Dark Light Sex… That is just the beginning of their fucking WOA HOTTTT BUT i’ll get to that a little later. Yes this book is HOT but it does have a story line and great PLOT too! Magic.. NO IT’S NOT YOUR TYPICAL PARANORMAL no vampire’s or wolves. The author does an awesome job of making this book very modern. So if your a paranormal virgin this is a GREAT book for you to pop your paranormal cherry. Hehe :-< This is a paranormal read so there is an ultraterrestriall being to this book. It’s more of the “good” vs “evil” spin. Which I found to be very realistic. Thinking of the choices Gabi is going to have to make when she turns 21 and graduates college. It was very realistic to put myself in her shoes and think about the paths and decisions we make in life. Sometimes what seems “bad” may not be ALL that “bad,” depending on who you ask. And that my friends is what Gabi has to choose between. Gabbi is being harassed, stalked and threatened by forces she has no idea are even after her. Gabi goes her whole life not knowing that she serves this great purpose that will be reveled on her 21st birthday. Oh, Joy! NOT really her whole life is about turn upside down and over and OUT. To add to her new found life discoveries she also has to deal with her new Man and trying to figure out what role he plays in her decision? Back to the Sex.. This book has some serious KF on Kat scale I definitely would say it needs to be an STRONG 8/9. Ok so I read this book what a month ago and I still have dreams of the moves Dorian and Gabi did. I will just give you guys some excerpts because I can not describe this hotness in my own words… ” I want to take my time with you. Torture you slowly. I’m going to savor every second of your undoing.”- Dorian, That’s only the beginning Dorian gets EVEN more HOTTER ” I don’t want to be disturbed when I ruin you.” YEEEESSSSSS OMGoodness ruin me!? Who says that? Dorian does and ladies he does he can RUIN ME any day any time any place!! - The Dark Light “How do you feel?” asks Dorian to Gabi after tearing her up “RUINED” ……..{YESSSS!!!] Seriously guys Man Up get this book and come on over to paranormalville because its hotter and I said so. -Laters, Juewelz xo SMIBookClub

That’s exactly what happened to me this past Friday. I reached out to many of you through my facebook page to ask for suggestions on what to read next and your response was incredible! I wasn’t in the mood for anything on my kindle, which is saying something since I have about 150 books unread on there right now. No joke. One of the suggestions that kept popping up was the Dark Light series by S.L. Jennings. So, I started the book around midnight, read until my eyes wouldn’t stay open anymore, went to work (all the while thinking about getting home to read Dark Light), went home and finished it, then immediately started The Dark Prince. I. Could. Not. Get. Enough! When Gabriella Winters turns twenty, her ordinary existence and sense of identity is shattered when she receives a journal belonging to her birth mother. Not only does she start to learn about her parents, but she also learns the reasons why they’re not around, the reason why she is, and also what she is. Dark Light follows Gabi as she tries to understand her new role and how it fits (or doesn’t) into the only world she’s ever known. “A year ago, I was human. At least I thought I was.” You all know by now how I feel about spoilers, so I’m going to avoid them at all costs. But I’d like to bring attention to a few things that I loved about these books. First off, the world that S.L. Jennings has created is awesome! When I read the book blurb, I wasn’t sure. Magic? Hmmmmmm. It could work, but what if it’s lame? Let me tell you-not lame! In fact, it was exactly the opposite. There was a lot of detail and world building that went into Dark Light, but at its core, there was a tremendous relationship filled with angst and adult content. I ask you: is there anything better? Not in my opinion, there isn’t! Shortly after her birthday, Gabriella meets and quickly becomes enamored with Dorian Skotos. Tall, built, piercing cerulean eyes, dark hair, rich…basically sex on a stick; Dorian is equally as interested in Gabi. The relationship that builds between these two characters is awesome and the tension, electric! Some may feel that all the sex these two have is over the top. I can assure you, I’m not one of them! All the sex scenes were steamy, sexy, and hot, hot, hot! I absolutely loved Dorian and Gabi together—their banter, their tension, the physicality. Loved it all! The one thing I was on and off with was Gabi. It’s not in the writing of her character, because in my opinion the writing was great! It’s the character herself. Look, I know that she’s young, she’s struggling to figure out who the hell she is and what that even means, but I sometimes felt she was a little dense. Even worse, it’s not because she’s stupid. Stupidity would be forgivable. If that were the case I could say, “It’s not her fault. She’s just dumb,” and move on. But no. This character is by no means dim. It’s because she chooses time and time again not to see what’s right in front of her. Sometimes I just wanted to shake her and scream, “WAKE THE HELL UP!” Other than those frustrating moments, I really liked Gabriella. She’s strong, she’s a lover and a fighter, and she’s got a mouth on her that would rival me and my friends. We could definitely hang out. The supporting cast is just as great as Gabriella and Dorian and there’s an antagonist you’ll love to hate. On top of that, there’s a serial killer on the loose that adds a little fear factor to the story. I can’t say enough great things about this book. So run, don’t walk, to your computer or nearest book store and buy Dark Light. While you’re there, you may as well pick up The Dark Prince too. Trust me on this one. You’ll finish Dark Light and immediately need to move on to the next part in Gabriella and Dorian’s story. It’s that good! Thanks to all you book nuts out there for recommending these books to me and helping me out of the book slump I didn’t know I was in! Nothing but love for you all…

This is an original take on the witches and sorcerer-type genre. Using the term witch is crass. Because these women are so much more than that. Instead they are called light enchanters. Their male conterparts are known as warlocks, instead of sorcerers or wizards, and they practice dark magic. AND THESE TWO OF THE SAME ARE AT WAR. Light Enchanters are hunting warlocks and vice-versa until, for the first time in EVER, an enchantress and a warlock get involved. Their love is epic but fated for tragedy as these two magic-weilding groups are enemies and won't have consorting between rival entities. BUT, BUT...their union produces a child. One of a kind. A fusion of light and dark. The consequence? DEATH OF BOTH PARENTS. FOR THE SURVIVAL OF THE CHILD. The book starts 20 years later when this child, Gabriella, an average, not-good-at-much college student learns of her lineage and inherits the knowledge that she is different and potentially the most powerful magic being in existence. She also learns that at 21, she will ascend and have to choose a side: Dark or light. Not exactly small news and although it is much to swallow, Gabs is surrounded by her loving adoptive parents who have sheltered her from the light and dark realms. She has great friends and tries to absorb the life-altering information in stride. ENTER SEX-ON-A-STICK DORIAN SKOTOS! He is the game changer. Dorian is mysterious, enigmatic, charming, sexual and sensual beyond anything Gabs has ever seen. They have an explosive chemistry and can't seem to stay away from each other. But there are secrets, of the epic-proportion kind. They are both hiding something from one another and this something can ultimately tear them apart. DID I SAY HOW INCREDIBLE THIS WAS???!!!! Gabriella is so relatable it isn't funny. Her reactions to Dorian and her near-constant denial of what he could possibly be is endearing yet heartbreaking all at the same time. She hides her eyes from the truth. She wants to live in the now and take as much from Dorian as she can. But her heart knows one emotion that threatens to topple her well-laid out intentions. Dorian. GOD! I haven't felt this way about a book boyfriend for a LONG time. He is the epitome of sensuality. Crazy sexy and alluring, he is FUCKING AMAZING. You sense his purpose, but Gabs is also a game changer for him, and together they discover how fantastic they are when emotions and desire collide. I LOVE THIS BOOK!! The sex?! OFF THE CHARTS! HOT DAMN!! You think you've read hot sex scenes?! HELL NO YOU HAVEN'T! The sensuality is un-FUCKING-believable! I am in awe of S.L Jennings and her creation of one of the best dark heroes I've ever read! AGHHH!! read this! There are other story lines here though and that makes this book so much more interesting. Gabs friends, her parents, her adoptive parents, and oh, Aurora: THE.BITCH.OF.THE.CENTURY. CLAWS MUCH?! I am jumping.., no! running.., no! nose-diving with no oxygen tank into The Dark Prince! HELL YES!! Can't wait! And I already know there is a third book so I am bracing myself for major chest pain once I finish the second! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

What I liked: The story: The plot itself had a very interesting promise. I've read quite a few paranormal and fantasy books and yet this still had a uniqueness to it that made it stand out from the rest. Dorian: Enough said! What I didn't like: Gabriella She came off as whiny and stupid. I can deal with the whiny parts but then there are parts that are so glaringly obvious and she doesn't get it until the end...I mean C'MON!!! Some of these things couldn't be more obvious if they smacked her on the forehead...and she STILL DOESN'T GET IT! GAH! The writing and dialogue: The dialogue between characters and even Gabriella and Dorian is at times overly childish and borderline comical (and not in a way that was meant to be funny). I had a tough time getting through some of the pages because of this. Even the steamy scenes (and there were quite a few) were ruined for me because of this. ..."The gap between my legs is humid with expectation" "...slowly stripping it from my body until it is on the floor. I sit before him, bare-nippled ummmm...mkay...never really heard it be referred to quite that way...moving on ... "I lift my hips to meet his stiff middle" ... "He unleashes his hard length" ... "He is filling me up, stretching my walls, losing himself in my secret place" Maybe some would be able to read past this. I am not saying I am some kind of sex scene writing expert [but I've read enough to know what I like...call me a connoisseur of sorts :)] I lost count the amount of times Gabrielle giggled, or Dorian snickered, cooed, or breathed a sentence. It wasn't all bad, but the things that I did dislike stuck out like a sore thumb for me. I will be reading the second book in the series, because the 2nd half of this book and the cliff-hanger ending (although I saw it coming at about 20% in) does have me intrigued as to where it will go.

Really more like 4.5 stars!!! I haven't read a paranormal romance book in awhile and this one did not disappoint at all. It reminded me why I love this niche in the genre. It was so well written and that little extra urban feel was great to see. I love when a book can appeal to various cultures through it's music, the scenery, food, and general plot of the story. I felt like this story does that all very well.

Before her 20th birthday, Gabriella was pretty much clueless about all three. In love with her best guy friend since the age of 14 and too crass and intimidating for most of the male population of Colorado Springs, love and good sex were virtually a myth. And then there’s magic. Freakin’ magic. There’s no way that legend could have a place in her less than exciting life. So why after twenty years of utter obscurity do her adopted parents hit her with the ton of bricks that is her true identity? And how the heck is she supposed to accept all this and become what she was truly created to be? Lucky for Gabs, sexy as sin Dorian is more than equipped to help her embrace these new revelations. And while everything about him feels oh so good, she soon learns that there’s more behind his crystal blue eyes, chiseled body and exotic beauty. Something dark, menacing and downright unnatural. Yet Gabs is in way too deep to even try to turn away from him now. Dark Light, Book 1 of the Dark Light Series, is the raw, emotional story of a young woman’s journey of self-discovery in a world that was not meant for her. And her scorching hot, lip-biting addiction for the man she can’t deny, no matter the cost. *Contains strong adult content. My Thoughts: Holy hell! I love this book! Thank you to S.L. for allowing me the opportunity to read your book in exchange for an objective and honest review! On a couple of levels, I could really relate to Gabriella. I know how it feels to not be really exceptional or have any clue as to what you want to do with your life. I have not had such a huge revelation as to a true identity or anything, but I know what she feels like in that other aspect. I really liked Gabriella. Even when she had a tendency to allow her jealousy to make her say things she shouldn't. She was actually pretty good at dealing with that. Her relationship with Dorian was intense and I loved it whenever they were together. Especially as they grew closer and things became more than just sex between them. Dorian. I love him. He's a new favorite book boyfriend. Even knowing who/what he is. I knew it from the moment they met. It took just a little longer to really know who he was, but I didn't want Gabi to stop being with him because I had the feeling that he cared more than he should. More than he wanted to. From the moment he saw her in that club and then touched her, he knew who/what she was. He had to have. I think I know now why he was so reluctant to meet Gabi's parents. Oh man! I knew Gabi would find out eventually, but I didn't think she would find out like that! I love that Donna and Chris play such a vital role in the story. There are so many series where a character that has parents barely interacts with those parents. Now, Gabi will have something really huge to talk to them about. I can't wait for that conversation! I need to read it! I really like Gabi's friends and I really want to know how that mess with Aurora plays out. What is she up to? Is she only doing it because of who Gabi is? I can't imagine she truly likes him. She's still so affected every time she sees Dorian with Gabi that I can't imagine she's actually over him in any way. Either way, she isn't to be trusted. There's no way that she can be. There's a lot of sex in this book. And I do mean a lot of sex. And it was great. S.L. Jennings sure knows how to write a sex scene. Geez. Talk about scorching up the pages. Each time between Gabi and Dorian was so intense and that time in the cabin was just so loving. I want them to be happy somehow. Can they get there? Can they truly be in love and on the same side? Oh man, I hope so. My Rating: ★★★★★ Gimme dat sequel!

My attention was first drawn by the cover, it's beautiful, there I go judging a book by it's cover again, can't help it but so glad it wasn't just a teaser luring me in. Next, the synopsis sounded interesting so I decided it would be my next read. The concept, the dialogue, the characters was great. Gabriella found out on her twentieth birthday that her biological parents weren't actually human and will be ascending to what she really is and is also expected to be the savior for the world she was originally born to. I liked how Gabriella handled the news, I was worried there would be whining and an annoying inner voice that would just turn me off. Thankfully Gabriella quickly came to an understanding. She seems to handle shocking news pretty well, hope she keeps it up. Although a little angry that her whole life was a big lie and has been planned out for her, which is to be expected, who wouldn't be. I think S.L. Jennings style of writing and transitions made Gabriella's acceptance easy to swallow. I was surprised there weren't any long inner and outer rants about the revelations brought to Gab's attention. Everything that happened or told to Gab's was resolved quickly, it was kinda new for me, never read anything like this. While reading the book I was trying to decide if I liked Jennings' transitions or not but since I wasn't losing my mind with annoying dialogue I decided I liked it. Cue Dorian, wealthy, laid back, drop dead gorgeous. All signs point to what Dorian might be, I kept hoping make it not so but even with the fears of what he might be, I saw him as someone Gabriella could trust and depend on. Let's just say that he and Gabriella's between the sheets and where ever else, romps where "HOT". Dorian kept casually and sneakily giving Gabriella information on or about what himself and the world he's from to have her ask the right questions. No such luck, that might be the only thing I didn't like very much about Gabriella, she was unwilling or afraid to ask the questions nagging her. I thought he should have just told her and I would have crossed my fingers that she accepts it like she's be doing everything else. But I guess that would have made things too easy. Another thing I liked about the story was that Gabriella was being prepared for what might occur with a lot of information by her parents and Dorian. I've never seen information be given out so soon and freely in a book before, it was refreshing. I hoped it would help when she found out who Dorian really is she wouldn't freak out and runaway. Okay, about the story concept, there are magical Light beings and the reverse, magical Dark beings, who were originally light beings but magical greed changed them. Gabriella was born into this magical world and is expected to bring them together, both want her to join their side but while one completely ignores her and just expect that she will choose them the other is campaigning for her dedication with threats and widespread violence in the human world. Guess which one is doing that. Gabriella has a tough choice to make because all is not what it seems and they've both already betrayed her before she even knew they existed. Gabriella will ascend at the age of 21 and has a year to decide while trying to keep herself alive. Very interesting concept and can't wait to see where these revelations take Gab's in the series.

She was adopted at birth and lived a very normal life until her 20th birthday. The day she turned 20 she discovered that the person she thought she was is not who she was born to be. Her world turned upside down she suddenly felt like everything she once thought she knew was in fact a lie. She comes to find out that she is not entirely human - she holds within her special powers that the world has never seen and soon will have to chose to go into the Light and chance being killed or stay in the Dark forever. Shortly after finding out about her birth parents and the powers she holds within she meets Dorian. **Appalude** Dorian walks into her life like a whirlwind and takes her breath away. He is mysterious, sexy, wealthy, and only has eyes for her. She will feel things she has never felt before, see things she has never seen before and she will question everything she ever thought she knew after meeting him. She is hiding something, he is hiding something, will there strong desire for each other pull them together or will their hidden secrets end them for good? Will Gabriella choose the Light or be swallowed by the Dark? Its her decision to make but the wrong decision can wind up being her last. S.L. Jennings does an amazing job with all the characters in this story, you can't help but fall in love with them. I loved Gabriella from the start, although, throughout the book I wanted to smack her a few times and tell her to open her eyes and actually see whats in front of her. Oh Dorian, what can I say about him. He is the definition of your paranormal bad boy. Dark, mysterious, sexy as sin, wealthy, smooth talker, honest, and sometimes likes to give it rough *wink wink*, I couldn't get enough of Dorian (especially when he was naked). Morgan, Gabs best friend, she is easy to love. She is very loyal to Gabs, very outspoken, has no filter, fashion foward, funny, and just plan bubbly to be around. Jared, Gabs best guy friend and the boy she has been in love with since 9th grade, he is very sweet, caring, your boy next door and is easy to love. So many characters in this book to fall in love with. Great story.. Definitely different from what I am used to reading but I am glad I gave this a chance because I really enjoyed this story. I will be biting my fingernails until the 2nd book is released so I can finish Gabriella's story and find out where her decision leads her. Great read by a wonderful author. You will not be disappointed with this book.

Nothing is ever easy, her personal life continues to pull her in different directions causing friendships to be strained and tested. IN walks Dorian, the mysterious guy who makes her tingle, pulls her in like a magnet and makes her world feel PERFECT. Not everything is as it seems. This book was an unexpected pleasure. I honestly didnt know what to expect. I love itl. Following along with Gabi as she grows, denies and loves has been an easy task. S.L. Jennings takes you through the motions of Gabi's life with an ease that puts you front and center. The layers built in to the first novel leave you anticipating and contemplating the next move. I have so many theories about what is to be that Im chomping at the bit for THE DARK PRINCE.

I really enjoyed this. All the mystery and magic. Lust and sex. Although I was kinda put off when Dorian would get aggressive and choke Gabi during sex. Although she wanted it, it just was weird for me. Although I do get it. They were both unleashing some of the darkness. What frustrated me to no end is that as a reader you know what Dorian is about. You know what hes doing even though its not from his pov. You just know that things aren't what they seem. The fact that Gabi didn't get a clue unti I really enjoyed this. All the mystery and magic. You just know that things aren't what they seem. The fact that Gabi didn't get a clue until almost the end, drove me nuts. She would think about the elephant in the room and then bury her head in the sand because she was afraid of what she would find. Dumb! I was also disappointed that there wasn't any confrontation in the end. I was really looking forward to all the secrets coming out on both side. But nope it ends with Gabi hurt and confused. Grrr...
