A wonderful vision for educators. A bit repetitive due to separate speeches that are printed. Major take away for me: development of "personality" (what I take to mean identity, communication, and voice) needs to be focus of education. Intellectual work is a means for this development to answer Who am I? How can I contribute to my community?

This is a collection of Maria Montessori's talks. Very interesting, especially what she says about the child's contribution to peace.

Some quotes form the book: “An education that is merely a blind struggle between the strong and the weak can only produce an inefficient man, weakened and enslaved, a man whose growth has been stunted” (22). “…the cause of war does not lie in armaments, but in the men who make use of them”(25). “…only two things are needed in order to establish peace in the world: above all, a new type of man, a better humanity; then an environment that should no longer set a limit to the infinite desire of man” (2 Some quotes form the book: “An education that is merely a blind struggle between the strong and the weak can only produce an inefficient man, weakened and enslaved, a man whose growth has been stunted” (22). “…the cause of war does not lie in armaments, but in the men who make use of them”(25). “…only two things are needed in order to establish peace in the world: above all, a new type of man, a better humanity; then an environment that should no longer set a limit to the infinite desire of man” (26-7). The end is like won’t anyone start this thing?

This was just a reprint of several speeches Maria Montessori made about how education should be instrumental in promoting peace. Great ideas, but repeated over and over. I wish there was a layout to the lessons she thought could come from this.
