This book is a handy size for putting in a bag or a large pocket and taking along with you as you explore the Washington, D.C. area on foot. It is well organized and includes lots of pictures. The text is thorough, including many details that explain exact routes and how to follow them. The author includes interesting details, but this is by no means a comprehensive city guide. It would be best used in conjunction with additional research on the area and points of interest. The author includes interesting details, but this is by no means a comprehensive city guide. It would be best used in conjunction with additional research on the area and points of interest. The book includes maps and might work as a stand-alone for the National Mall and downtown areas for those already familiar with D.C., but carrying a more detailed map (or charged phone with map app) is recommended. The writing seems better at the beginning, getting more basic later in the book. That may have been reader interest waning though. Generally the nonfiction I read had an overarching theme or point, so this seemed to drag on. If you like to walk and would like to be able to plan your path (or take one laid out in detail) so that you can visit certain sites, then this book is an excellent choice. If you are looking for a comprehensive guidebook or a captivating bunch of D.C. stories, look elsewhere.

Wow! This has everything I'd ever need to tour the DC area. I've lived here for two years and I still want to go visit point by point. It even tells you the best times to photograph some of the spots.
