They make a pitt stop to the sparkling falls, where the two fourth-grader detectives overhear the bus driver asking their teachers if he can take them on a shortcut. The teachers aren't sure, but the bus driver insists. They get back on the bus, and Tank realizes theyŕe heading towards the Dark Depths. They walk up to tell the teachers, and while walking up, Fizz runs into the bus driver and realizes he’s an ogre. They tell their teachers about the so-called shortcut they’re taking, but the teachers don't really believe them. The teachers still ask the bus driver, and he says they’re right on time, and in the right place. They see a figure off the road, then the bus driver drives them off the road. The teachers say it must have been an accident, and the bus driver is outside right now fixing the bus. Tank and Fizz run out, and discover that he’s not fixing it, but he’s creating a motorcycle. They try to stop him from escaping, but he and the figure on the road jump on the bike and ride away! Not before Tank and Fizz catch a good look at them, and realize that they’re carrying a crown! But they get away, and after they get away, the spider queen finds them, and says THEY stole the crown! The spider queen ties them up and threatens to eat them! Then one of their classmates they don’t like named Rizzo tells the queen of spiders that they were the people who saw the thieves escape, and they are also detectives. The queen sends them to find the crown of peace along with Captain Scorn, because if they don’t, the whole mountain will collapse! They set out with the captain and a crew of his best soldiers, but the captain doesn’t like them. The captain says they are taking a shortcut, and he leaves the two young detectives to be eaten by Lagalanders, savage monsters. But just in time, they’re rescued by a spider named Hugo, who we later discover is Captain Scorn’s son. Hugo helps them, and they start traveling across the swamp. But then they meet a Lagalander, who is actually a nice Lagalander and helps them reach their destination, the lava falls. Lava falls is a big town, but they go straight to the Wizard Outpost, since the Lagalander left them a note written in magic. They contact their friend Aleetha, a wizard-in-training, from the outpost, and Aleetha takes the note and promises to decipher it. Then they go outside, and spot the thieves leaving a store, but they can’t catch him. Then, right after, they see Captain Scorn exiting the same store! Tank puts a tracker on him, but the tracker is cutting in and out. They follow him into a abandoned alleyway, where they’re kidnapped by Dragonkin. The dragonkin bring them to Firebane Drakeclaw, the oldest dragon alive, as old as the mountain himself. He tells them he wants them to find the crown to fix the braces, so then he tells them where the thieves were last seen. They have to go under the lava, into a cave in a lava-proof sub, but Firebane doesn’t go with them. They find Captain Scorn and discover Hugo’s his son. Then they find Pantazium, the rare rock, which sets off a trap. Lava starts flooding the cave. They run out to try to ride back in the sub, but it leaves. Thankfully, they find another sub, and they get in that one. But it’s out of fuel, and Lava Sharks are banging at the glass and trying to break it. Tank finds the solution, though, by using the Pantazium to fuel the sub. They go up to the surface, and Captain Scorn tells them that Firebane is evil, and they run to the crown ceremony, but when they get there the dwarf king and the spider queen say that Firebane’s a hero since he found the crown. Then the spider queen places the crown on the pedestal. But Firebane reveals he’s evil. But just then, Aleetha and their principal, who is the spider queen’s sister, appears. Then they both touch the crown, which unlocks its powers! Firebane then takes the crown and sucks everyone into it but Hugo, Aleetha, Tank and Fizz. They then have to save the whole city. They run to the top of the Wizards tower, since both Tank and Aleetha realized that if you touch the Pantazium in the crown to another piece of Pantazium, it will cause a huge reaction, which will free everyone who was sucked into the crown. So they shoot Fizz up to Firebane, where he will try to free everyone. Meanwhile, Tank, Aleetha and Hugo are thrown into the chasm, but Hugo saves them. But then Tank is thrown back into the chasm. But he realizes it’s just a regenerative cycle, and perfectly safe, unlike everyone previously thought. Fizz touches the Pantazium he’s holding to the one in the crown and everyone’s freed. Then Tank explains about the chasm not really destroying everything, and then they go back to school.

The ogre driver and his dwarf accomplice steal the kingdom’s crown from the spider queen and jet away. While their classmates are wound tightly as the next spider snack, Tank and Fizz are spared and set out to recover the crown. After encounters with fangy fishpeople, lava lakes complete with lava sharks, and with some help from their new spider friend and old magician friend (who uses the wizard library/internet for research), Tank and Fizz get to the bottom of dragon Firebane Drakeclaw’s plot to rule the kingdom. The story includes interspersed graphic novel panels which highlight the characters’ emotions, settings, and action scenes. Although there are references to Tank and Fizz’s previous “cases,” this book could be read as a stand-alone episode. This 240 page hybrid novel/graphic novel could appeal to intermediate graduates of the Stink and Squish series.
